The message of the cross is foolish to those who are headed for destruction! But we who are being saved know it is the very power of God. 19 As the Scriptures say,
“I will destroy the wisdom of the wise
and discard the intelligence of the intelligent.”
20 So where does this leave the philosophers, the scholars, and the world’s brilliant debaters? God has made the wisdom of this world look foolish. 21 Since God in his wisdom saw to it that the world would never know him through human wisdom, he has used our foolish preaching to save those who believe. 22 It is foolish to the Jews, who ask for signs from heaven. And it is foolish to the Greeks, who seek human wisdom. 23 So when we preach that Christ was crucified, the Jews are offended and the Gentiles say it’s all nonsense.24 But to those called by God to salvation, both Jews and Gentiles, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25 This foolish plan of God is wiser than the wisest of human plans, and God’s weakness is stronger than the greatest of human strength.
How many people are looking for another message?
How many people have I met “Looking for a sign” like the Jews, to prove the cross of Christ?
How many people have I met “Seeking human wisdom” like the Greeks, to find the hidden truth of Christ?
How many people have I met who are either looking for signs and manifestations of the Holy Spirit (spiritual pride & arrogance), or busy teaching Gods word, breaking it down in ancient Greek and Hebrew, getting to the marrow of the word in an attempt to have greater understanding (intellectual pride & arrogance). When we look to ourselves and our human knowledge in an attempt to understand the truth of God, are we not eating the fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil again… Sitting around trying to figure out what is best for us with a limited perspective and a distorted view of reality?
Now we see things imperfectly, like puzzling reflections in a mirror, but then we will see everything with perfect clarity. All that I know now is partial and incomplete, but then I will know everything completely, just as God now knows me completely.
I am amazed at the current “quest for knowledge” it is no different than the guru seeking from the past – enlightenment. I am reminded of and the women who are always seeking after new teaching, but forever unable to understand.
Why do we keep seeking “our truth” and skip coming to terms with “the Truth”? Our truth may be subject to change, but God’s truth was the same yesterday as today, and forever more. Believing in a God as we understand Him, is a very limited viewpoint. God is infinite, we, not so much. We have a hard time grasping time and space, and the scriptures say that God created both and set them in motion. How do we comprehend a God whose handiwork is simply incomprehensible? When we set limits on our belief, or worse limits on our God, what is the end result? Who is God? What can change our viewpoint to a right viewpoint?
I believe the answer lies in seeking God with the balance of Spirit & Truth. God is worshipped in Spirit and Truth. The best description I have heard is that we are in a jet airplane. We have two wings, one called Spirit and one called Truth. Which one would you like to land without? God’s Word makes no sense to the truth seekers without Spirit and if it can be remembered the result is legalism. God’s Spirit does not trump His Word – so those seeking only spirit wind up in the magical realms where hyper-spirituality and meta-physics reign. I would call this occult, but I’m sure those people who have found themselves in this realm would argue because they do it all in Jesus’ name. Jesus himself spoke about this in Matthew 7:
When pressed for a sign, Jesus told the Jews that none would be given except the sign of Jonah.
Christ was killed, and placed in a tomb. He arose three days later – just like Jonah, 3 days in the belly of the great fish. We have received both sign and knowledge. What keeps us from believing?
